CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Chinatown Inn opened in 1943 and is the last landmark of Pittsburgh’s former Chinatown where Chinese immigrants built a close community. The third-generation Yee family runs the restaurant & preserves its local heritage with classic Cantonese meals and a historic marker set in 2022. NEXTpittsburgh
- ➤ This weekend, many cultural events will take place in Pittsburgh from May 30 to June 1, including a festival of books at the Carnegie Library, a pride parade, local theater shows, and tech-driven art exhibits — organizers across the city plan immersive experiences and community workshops — to celebrate the arts and local creativity. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Pennsylvania American Water announced Wednesday that its $7.5M project will begin this summer and replace around 3.4 miles of water mains in several Pittsburgh wards. Contractors will work weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and customers may see short service interruptions—water might be discolored and pressure lower until final fixes are done late fall and early spring 2026. - ➤ Officials closed the Herron Avenue Bridge in Pittsburgh on Wednesday after it was found deficient—Pittsburgh Regional Transit said the shutdown affected bus stops on key routes and will remain in effect indefinitely. WPXI
- ➤ City, county and state officials held a ribbon cutting yesterday after more than two years and $13M in work on the Armstrong Tunnel. The tunnel reopened today with new bright lights—wider lanes and larger sidewalks that help make it safer for drivers and pedestrians. WPXI
- ➤ The Armstrong Tunnel reopened today after more than two years of construction, linking Downtown with the South Side and easing travel for local drivers. CBS Pittsburgh
- ➤ The Plum School Board approved its final budget with a 2.26% tax increase on Tuesday + the tax rate rose from 23.3896 mills to 23.9159 mills while revenue and spending were set at about $77.6 million, which is $3.3 million more than last school year and without cuts to staff or programs. - ➤ Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Broderick Jones dropped from 325 to 305 pounds and switched from right tackle to left tackle after changing his workout routine and diet this offseason—he said the move helps him regain the natural position he played in college as he prepares for training camp. Jones is now focused on mastering his left-side play and refining his understanding of the playbook. PennLive
- ➤ Officials announced new parking guidelines and road restrictions for the 125th U.S. Open Championship at Oakmont Country Club from June 9th to 15th—residents near the club will receive hangtags and fans must use satellite parking with complimentary shuttle buses from the RED and BLUE lots. Shuttle buses will drop fans off 150 yards from Gate 1 and drivers are advised to follow designated routes and use a ride share drop-off at Tenth Street Elementary to avoid heavy delays. WTAE
