  • A new $750,000 playground opened at Riverview Park on Pittsburgh’s North Side Tuesday morning, featuring upgraded swings, slides, and a spinning merry-go-round. Funded by RAD and located near the Allegheny Observatory, it offers a special space for local families.  WTAE

  • McCormick & Schmick's closed its downtown restaurant Tuesday after 18 years at Piatt Place, and its parent company Landry's is transitioning team members to nearby sister locations while urging guests to visit Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steakhouse, Morton's The Steakhouse, Grand Concourse and Mitchell's Fish Market.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • After abrupt layoffs last Tuesday at Pittsburgh Public Theater, a transition team working on its merger with Pittsburgh CLO said the cuts hurt funding and trust. The team will present a new business model by the end of July that could restore the jobs.  WTAE

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new Aer Lingus flight at Pittsburgh International Airport could help attract Irish companies to invest in a nearby manufacturing campus, boosting local economic prospects. Devlin Robinson noted the move will raise the airport’s profile and support future business growth.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Protesters, led by 412 Justice (a local advocacy group), will rally at 5:00 p.m. outside the Pittsburgh Public Schools building in Oakland before a hearing on proposed closures of nine school buildings, including seven planned for next school year. The school board will vote on the plan Wednesday evening.  KDKA
  • Pittsburgh Action News 4 surprised teacher Phylicia Swain at Miller PreK-5 in the Hill District to honor her as WTAE Teacher of the Month for May; her students call her classroom a happy place and a $1,000 donation from Closets by Design will boost her teaching supplies before summer break.  WTAE
  • Pittsburgh Public Schools held a public hearing yesterday at 6 p.m. to review a plan to close nine school buildings across two school years; the board will vote on the Future-Ready Facilities Plan at 6:30 p.m. today.  The Tribune-Review

  • Four years ago Tuesday, 17 Norfolk Southern trains derailed in Harmar Township and spilled 3,000 gallons of petroleum distillate into the Allegheny River. A local nonprofit says work continues to secure safe waterways for Pittsburgh.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Veteran Penguins center Evgeni Malkin signed a one-year deal Tuesday (May 26) with an AAV of $5.5M and bonuses that could bring his total to $9M, confirmed via email and public release while teammates praised his return to hockeytown.  WPXI
  • After missing all of 2025 with an ACL injury, Steelers defensive lineman Dean Lowry signed a one-year contract on Tuesday to return to Pittsburgh. The 31-year-old aims to regain his form as he prepares for the upcoming season.  WPXI
  • On May 26, the Pirates beat the Cubs 12-1 as Esmerlyn Valdez hit a two-run home run to cap a five-run first inning and extend Chicago’s losing streak to 10 games. Rookie Konnor Griffin became the youngest leadoff batter for the Pirates since 1952.  CBS Pittsburgh
