COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charleroi firefighters rescued an unharmed kitten stuck 30 feet in a Washington County storm drain on Saturday night. They used a camera to locate the pet and a leaf blower to free it safely.  WPXI
  • Manor American Legion Post 472 and the Norwin Historical Society held a Memorial Day ceremony at Brush Creek Cemetery yesterday to honor local veterans with a 21-gun salute using flags placed beside about 2,000 veteran headstones. The groups revived the event in 2017 to restore this local tradition.  The Tribune-Review
  • A solemn ceremony held yesterday at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies honored veterans as flags were planted at all 16,800 graves for the first time — marking a significant tribute to those who served.  WPXI
  • Local veterans and families gathered at Deer Creek Cemetery in Cheswick on Sunday afternoon for a Memorial Day service, where Springdale VFW Post 1437 commander Mark Donahue said the flags and gravestones honored fallen friends.  The Tribune-Review

  • Today, Aer Lingus lands its inaugural direct flight from Dublin in Pittsburgh — passengers receive Eat'n Park’s Smiley cookies and a delegation of business and government leaders onboard. The route operates four times per week except in January and February.  WPXI

  • The Postal Service announced Sunday that the 2018 Mister Rogers stamp won the 2026 Stamp Encore contest and will be reissued — with a new four-image souvenir sheet — for collectors.  WTAE
  • Local historical societies in Carnegie, Evans City, and the Ligonier area work to keep memories alive as America turns 250 by showcasing artifacts like Honus Wagner’s baseball bat and a filming site from Night of the Living Dead.   • Latrobe is set to host its annual Mister Rogers Family Days from (June 1-6) downtown, honoring Fred Rogers with family-friendly activities. The festival features a new Neighborhood Passport & Keepsake Book, a Storybook Walk, and a Community Open House at the Rogers Institute.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Susan Barbe-Stas from Hempfield Area High, with 30 years teaching experience, was named one of 12 finalists for the 2027 Teacher of the Year Award after a parent nominated her. The state Department of Education will announce the winner in December (the nomination process continues).  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania officials lower flags to half-staff today in a statewide tribute to fallen military members. The order honors those who served and is observed as a mark of respect.  WPXI

  • Duquesne Light reminded locals to be careful near power lines after one man was hospitalized in Greenfield and another was electrocuted in Fayette County; it advised contractors and residents to check worksites and follow safety measures + OSHA standards as summer work increases.  CBS Pittsburgh

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, Esmerlyn Valdez hit his first career home run as the Pirates beat the Blue Jays 4-1 to avoid a three-game sweep. Valdez, promoted from Triple-A, improved his performance after starting 0-for-7 earlier in the game.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Steelers receiver Roman Wilson switched from number 10 to 14 on Wednesday plus he said his high school number feels comfortable and could spark a breakout season. He had 12 receptions for 166 yards plus two touchdowns last season.  WPXI
