COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park Skating Rink will offer its first roller skating sessions in 50 years starting May 23 with times from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.—the program is supported by the Allegheny Regional Asset District and local organizers who worked with the skating community.  WPXI

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 20-inch water main broke in Banksville yesterday morning near the intersection of Potomac and Banksville avenues—flooding a street and causing water damage to three homes while Columbia Gas was called to check a gas smell and an oil leak—and officials said the road will remain closed until further notice.  WTAE

  • Today Pittsburgh Technology Council president Audrey Russo and Keystone Space Collaborative co-founder Justine Kasznica launched the DREAMS Coalition to unite local experts in data, robotics, energy, AI, manufacturing and security to boost the region's space exploration role. The initiative opened its collaborative workspace in Bakery Square—offering up to 30 groups access to $200,000 in awards and Keystone Innovation Zone tax credits.  NEXTpittsburgh

  • The owners of Brighton Rehab and Wellness Center were sentenced to pay over $15 million in restitution after years of fraud—courts found significant financial wrongdoing.  CBS Pittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two candidates in District 9 for Pittsburgh Public Schools are separated by one vote and it may take weeks before the final count is confirmed as all precincts report and provisional ballots are tallied. Incumbent School Board President Gene Walker and challenger Allie Petonic—a union steelworker—offer different approaches to school consolidation and community involvement.  WPXI

  • Beaver teen Elias Kazas (diagnosed with a rare brain cancer at age 12) will soon walk the graduation stage six years after his diagnosis while his tumor remains, as he credits his love for basketball for pushing him through aggressive treatment.
