ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • PennDOT said wrong-way driving crashes along Route 30 in Hempfield Township — including an April incident with an 80-year-old driver — have left survivors with severe injuries and that it will review police data before deciding if further safety measures are needed.  WPXI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Reuters reported that Nippon Steel doubled its investment pledge in Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel — a move that raises its financial commitment for future operations.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • Pittsburgh police are investigating antisemitic flyers spread on lawns in the Squirrel Hill area, home to the Tree of Life synagogue attacked in 2018, that claimed the Talmud promoted a Jewish plan for world domination (with flyers found in plastic bags containing corn kernels) and noted a suspect in a light-colored SUV (with Ohio plates) reportedly drove by while shouting insults.  PennLive
  • On May 20, a federal judge ordered two Pittsburgh-area nursing home companies to pay over $15 million in restitution for healthcare fraud—Comprehensive Healthcare Management Services LLC must pay more than $12.6 million and serve five years probation while Mt. Lebanon Operations LLC owes over $2.7 million and will serve one year probation based on family accounts of worsening staffing that affected care.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday morning, Pittsburgh’s mayoral primary saw incumbent Ed Gainey and challenger Corey O’Connor cast their ballots at local sites in Lincoln-Lemington and Point Breeze. The candidates stressed their plans to reduce violent crime and boost affordable housing as officials prepare to post results after 8 p.m.  The Tribune-Review
  • Retired police officer Tony Moreno won Pittsburgh's GOP mayoral primary and will appear on the November ballot—he had previously run for mayor and defeated his rival to secure the nomination.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Steelers signed pass rusher Jack Sawyer to a four-year contract worth $5.15 million with $950,932 guaranteed after the team drafted him as the No. 123 pick last season. Sawyer recorded 23 sacks at Ohio State (9 in his senior season) and is expected to bolster the team's edge rusher group as he begins his rookie tenure.  PennLive
  • Will Howard, the Steelers' sixth-round pick from Ohio State, said he wants to be the franchise's next top player—bringing the gritty style inspired by Ben Roethlisberger. He threw for 4010 yards with 35 touchdowns at Ohio State and now joins Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as one of the most experienced quarterbacks in his class.  PennLive
  • Central Valley defeated West Mifflin 3-2 in an 11-inning playoff game that featured an odd umpire decision — a rare call in a high school Class 4A matchup. Hempfield also upset North Allegheny in a separate playoff game.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
