COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pittsburgh officials and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy announced a $660,000 upgrade to nearly 80-acre McKinley Park to add new gathering spaces, an outdoor learning area, and improved trail connections near Beltzhoover, Bon Air, and Knoxville. Construction will finish in the fall to bring more accessible, community-built spaces to the park.  The Tribune-Review

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ross Park Mall announced that a Disney Store Limited Time will open on May 23 at 10 a.m. at its upper level by J. Crew, offering Disney apparel, toys, and collectibles; the store (operating on varied hours through the holiday season) is part of a Go! Retail Group partnership.  KDKA
  • At Kuhn’s Market in Hopewell Township, a Pennsylvania Lottery Fast Play ticket sold recently is worth $131,095. Winners must sign the ticket immediately and have one year to claim their prize — officials say the game is printed on-demand and works like a scratch-off.  KDKA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dan + Shay are set to perform at PPG Paints Arena on Friday, Oct. 9, with Tyler Hubbard and Josh Ross joining the lineup as North Allegheny native Dan Smyers returns home (ticket presales begin Tuesday and general sales open Friday morning).  WTAE
  • The Smashing Pumpkins will bring their Rats in a Cage tour with a special anniversary show at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 6 with Meg Myers (opening act) and two sets featuring Mellon Collie and fan favorites; ticket sales start Thursday after presales begin Tuesday.  WTAE

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Plum School District will join a state pilot program to teach students about disabilities, making it the only public district in Southwestern Pennsylvania among 10 statewide institutions. It will use a $30,000 grant over three years to boost its inclusive curriculum.  The Tribune-Review
  • RMU awarded WWII veteran Emily Drake an honorary degree at its spring graduate ceremony last Friday at the UPMC Events Center in Moon. Drake — who will turn 101 on July 4 — paused her academic path to join the Women’s Army Corps during WWII.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Public Works announced that Universal Road between Jefferson Road and Keefer Drive in Penn Hills will have periodic lane closures starting tomorrow, May 20, for milling, paving, and drainage improvements until work wraps in August. Drivers should expect delays as flaggers direct traffic.  Allegheny County
  • Allegheny County Department of Human Services released its 2026 Community Counts report yesterday, May 18, after a Feb. 3 count estimated 1,108 people were homeless plus 930 sheltered and 178 unsheltered; the agency introduced new counting methods to track future trends.  Allegheny County

  • With high temperatures expected to reach the 90s over the next days, sleep expert Dr. Brian Chen advises locals to adjust bedroom settings (ideal range 60 to 67°F) and reduce noise and light for better sleep quality.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • With near-record heat this week, Allegheny County health experts warn residents of a rising Lyme disease risk as 387 cases were recorded from Jan. 1 to May 17; officials advise checking for ticks and taking preventive steps (wearing long sleeves and using tweezers for removal) to reduce exposure.  The Tribune-Review

SPORTS NEWS

  • Aaron Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the Steelers (returning to Pittsburgh) on Monday at the first day of OTAs. The veteran quarterback spent 18 seasons with the Packers and will begin his 22nd season with a reported contract of up to $25 million.  WPXI
  • At the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, the Steelers shifted positions on their offensive line during OTAs as they prepare for the upcoming season. Offensive tackle Troy Fautanu (who played left tackle at Washington) is expected to return to that role while rookie Max Iheanachor will stay on the right side.  PennLive
