BUSINESS NEWS

  • Allegheny County health officials proposed an 18-week paid parental leave plan and opened a 30-day public comment period Wednesday. Local small business owners worry the new rules could drive up costs and change hiring practices before the plan may be adopted in July.  The Tribune-Review
  • Officials announced Thursday that Loews Hotels signed a letter of intent to build a new hotel linked to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. The project will include 500 beds & a restaurant and create 1,600 union jobs with a $418 million investment and $30 million state funds.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Demolition is underway at Tree of Life Synagogue nearly eight years after the 2018 attack as officials begin an extensive rebuild. The renovated facility will include a museum, exhibition space, classrooms, a social hall, and a 300-seat sanctuary slated to open in 2028.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The Millvale Music Festival will take place this weekend, featuring over 300 musical acts on 30+ stages in Millvale and offering local music fans a day of diverse live performances.  CBS Pittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools uses a Hogwarts-style house system at Mifflin PreK-8 to build community and improve student behavior. The program, piloted in nine middle schools today with 13 more planned for fall, rewards teamwork and academic effort among students, teachers (and staff).  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ross/West View EMS launched its new pre-hospital blood program for North Hills and used it to stabilize a Ross man with life-threatening injuries. The service will host a blood drive at 5325 Perrysville Ave on Wednesday, May 27 + plans quarterly drives to broaden early care.  The Tribune-Review

  • Steelers fans are booking trips as travel agencies and Pittsburgh International Airport prepare for the team’s first NFL regular-season game in Paris on Oct. 25 — the Steelers will face the New Orleans Saints while packages include day trips to explore the French countryside.  WTAE
  • Carmichaels senior Bailey Barnyak (starting since freshman year) posted strong stats as the Mikes' starting pitcher in the WPIAL/City League final regular season. Her performance marked another stellar year for the team.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
