COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community leaders, officials, parents, and teens met Tuesday night in Market Square to discuss rising violence and a temporary rule requiring minors to be with an adult from 3 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Sunday. They stressed the need for more youth programs to improve safety.  WTAE
  • On April 16, the My Bike Program at Orchard Hill Church in Franklin Park presented seven adaptive bikes to children with disabilities, including four-year-old Yisene Bayala (from Shaler) who grinned widely at his new ride. Donations raised $17,500 through Al’s Bike Drive to support the initiative.  The Tribune-Review

  • This weekend, May 14-17, Pittsburgh hosts a vibrant mix of spring events including Vegan Restaurant Week, film festivals in Lawrenceville, and live performances at Millvale Music Festival, alongside art walks, vintage crawls, food fests, and garden parties at iconic venues. EDUCATION NEWS

  • United Way of Southwestern Pa. held its 8th annual Big Book Drop on Wednesday at Acrisure Stadium, packing 40,000 books for children ages 0-12. Partner agencies will deliver the books today to families in need to boost summer reading.  The Tribune-Review
  • New Kensington-Arnold School District has proposed a nearly 2% tax hike for the upcoming school year to raise about $220,000 for new curriculum and student support. A finance committee meeting will be scheduled soon to review the proposed budget details.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • O’Hara officials and cafe owners are tackling parking issues by partnering with PennDOT to turn a vacant lot near Powers Run Road + Camberwell Drive into a municipal parking area, which will add 16 new spaces as part of efforts to ease local congestion.  The Tribune-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allegheny County health officials have proposed to give new parents 18 weeks of paid leave to help improve public health outcomes — the board met Wednesday at the county courthouse and will hold a 30-day comment period for community input — the plan applies to public and private sector workers.  WTAE

  • The Steelers released cornerback Cory Trice Jr. after a failed physical test & limited play due to repeated injuries, giving him a chance to sign with another team.  PennLive
  • On October 25, the Pittsburgh Steelers will travel overseas to play an NFL game in Paris, France. The game will offer international fans a chance to cheer for the team as it extends its global reach.  KDKA
