  • A 91-year-old Pittsburgh resident is seeking reimbursement after a broken water line flooded her home on May 12; she described the cleanup as a struggle, prompting Chief Investigator Rick Earle to investigate the claim.  WPXI
  • On April 25, the Garden Gala fundraiser raised a record $57,000 for Northland Public Library in McCandless, with 360 guests (breaking the 2024 record) as the event transformed the venue into a Phantom of the Opera themed experience.  The Tribune-Review

  • Demolition began Monday on properties (1421-1425 Freeport Road) in Harrison for 7 Brew, a drive-through kiosk serving coffee and energy drinks. The new shop is set to open next to Sheetz as local Harvest Moon transitions to an event space.  The Tribune-Review
  • Pamela's Diner mourns the loss of co-founder Gail Klingensmith, a beloved figure behind the iconic restaurant known for its crispy hotcakes and retro charm. Details on services have not yet been announced by her family or the diner.  KDKA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iconic hairstylist Arnold Zegarelli, known for his mentorship in Pittsburgh’s hair industry, died Saturday at 89 from Alzheimer’s disease; a celebration of his life will be held May 22 at Slater's Funeral Home in Green Tree.  The Tribune-Review
  • Franklin Regional student AJ Schmidt and two peers will join the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra on a 10-day tour of Greece starting June 16. The group will first perform at Heinz Hall on May 17 then visit Athens, Kavala, Volos and Thessaloniki to explore local history and culture.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit officials confirmed that test trips cleared the Mon Incline after two passengers were rescued last Thursday. The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry will inspect the 156-year-old landmark today morning — if the results are positive, it will reopen by the afternoon.  WPXI
  • Applications are open for Pittsburgh’s City Cuts program that provides free lawn cutting to eligible residents; services start in early June through fall and residents (including seniors and veterans) can call 311 to register on a first-come, first-served basis.  WPXI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allegheny Health Network celebrated its 100,000th birth on Tuesday at five labor and delivery units while honoring caregivers with special events and onesies reading 100,000+Me.  KDKA
  • Local counselor David Heavner of Buffalo Township launched a mental health initiative today to educate students, parents, and the community—drawing on his 31 years of experience at Gateway High School. He detailed his plans in a new book and is developing a wellness course for schools.  The Tribune-Review

  • The Pirates promoted Seth Hernandez on Monday, May 11 to join their High-A Greensboro affiliate as part of their Minor League Monday update, a move that strengthens the team’s minor league pipeline.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • On Tuesday night at PNC Park, Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes nearly pitched a perfect game, losing his no-hit bid after hitting a batter. His feat marked the third time in four starts as Pittsburgh beat the Rockies 3-1.  WPXI
