COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Verona boy got a new best friend when Champion Canine donated a puppy named Chief Saturday after his pet was killed in a dog attack. The donation includes training and supplies — a generous local effort to help him recover.  WPXI
  • Nineteen-year-old Robert Jones from Tarentum joined Summit Hose after witnessing a fire near his home and quickly advanced to earn the Firefighter of the Year Award; he answered nearly every call last year and completed his Firefighter 1 state certification, with chief Josh Fox praising his dedication.  The Tribune-Review
  • Pittsburgh Market Square now requires anyone under 18 to be with an adult on Thursday to Sunday (3 p.m. to midnight) as the new rule takes effect.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Lawrenceville Distilling Co. has moved its craft cocktail business to Verona, inaugurating Riverbank Distillery inside a renovated 100-year-old bank at 742 Allegheny River Blvd. The tasting room and vault space retain historic charm — and plans include adding outdoor seating.  The Tribune-Review
  • Pittsburgh-area pharmacies struggle with razor-thin margins as PBMs often pay less than it costs to fill prescriptions, and while Act 77—enacted in 2024—has begun boosting transparency this year, many supports will not fully kick in until 2028 + some shops worry about closing before safeguards help.  The Tribune-Review

  • At a Saturday market at West Overton Village (Scottdale) vendors sold local 100-proof rye whiskey and freshly baked bread made using an 18th-century clay oven on a rainy day, highlighting a long history of craft and entrepreneurial spirit.  The Tribune-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mars Area High School won the 2026 National High School Mascot brackets competition on May 9 when its Fightin’ Planets defeated the Boiling Springs Bubblers. Superintendent Dr. Mark Gross thanked students, staff and the community for their support.  WPXI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Shapiro is asking for expedited federal support after an April freeze hurt specialty crops, potentially leading to $150–200 million in losses; he met with over 200 growers in Lancaster and urged USDA to speed damage assessments & help with crop insurance claims.  WPXI
  • Next week, Pittsburgh will resurface eight streets and install ADA curb ramps at six spots as part of its 2026 infrastructure work. The project includes two segments of Forbes Avenue — one between Murray and Aylesboro and one between Plainfield and Margaret Morrison — and may change due to weather.  PennLive

  • Aaron Rodgers has stayed in town without meeting the Steelers as they held their rookie minicamp over the weekend; team officials continue positive talks with his agent+representatives about his potential return, leaving his next move pending.  PennLive
  • Scotty Miller, a former Steelers wide receiver and special teams player, signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears after a rookie minicamp tryout. Miller (a free agent after two seasons in Pittsburgh) will try to earn a roster spot with his new team.  PennLive
  • Rookie quarterback Drew Allar refined his footwork with Coach McCarthy and Coach Arth during Steelers’ rookie minicamp on May 9. The team is rebuilding him from the ground up to fit the West Coast offense and rise within Pittsburgh.  PennLive
