CRIME NEWS

  • Pittsburgh police are investigating the in-custody death of a man who acted erratically on Saw Mill Run Boulevard early Friday morning + witnesses said he tried to enter a moving pickup truck at an intersection before officers took him into custody and he later died at the hospital.  WTAE
  • Pittsburgh-area law enforcement and federal agencies joined Shaler Police on Friday to warn residents about sophisticated scams using calls, texts, emails, and mail that aim to steal money and personal information. Officials advised verifying unknown messages and checking with family when approached, noting that scammers are increasingly convincing—using advanced technology.  CBS Pittsburgh

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Executive Sara Innamorato celebrated awards from the Active Allegheny Grant Program on May 09, funding projects in Sharpsburg Borough ($50,000), South Fayette Township ($40,000), Duquesne ($39,000), and Mt. Lebanon/Dormont Borough ($50,000) to improve pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. The program, which has supported 45 communities with over $1.5 million since 2016, is part of a broader county plan to enhance safe transportation in our area.  Allegheny County
  • Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday filed a lawsuit on Friday against Pittsburgh interior designer Lauren Piasecki of Black Cherry Design for not finishing home projects and leaving customers out more than $190,000. The suit seeks to have her pay back the money and stop taking prepayments — anyone who believes they were scammed should file a complaint.  WPXI

  • Yesterday, the community gathered outside Second Avenue Commons for the Hepatitis Awareness Resource Fair where residents received free hepatitis C and HIV testing, hepatitis A vaccinations, naloxone, and harm reduction resources. The event was hosted by the Community Liver Alliance and the Allegheny County Health Department — part of an effort during Hepatitis Awareness Month to connect people with testing and treatment.  Allegheny County

  • On Friday the Steelers inked quarterback Will Howard to a 4-year rookie contract after drafting him with the 185th pick. He brings championship experience from leading Ohio State to a national title—his senior year included over 4,000 passing yards and 35 touchdowns.  WPXI
  • Two popular Pittsburgh Penguins forwards, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, were named to the NHL Quarter Century team on Friday as part of seven skaters who debuted from 2000 to 2010 + Crosby led in regular season totals while Malkin shined in the playoffs and earned many career awards.  WPXI
  • DICK's House of Sport in Ross Township unveiled a rare Paul Skenes rookie card in a tempered glass display with a 1500 pound safe that secured the card's over $1 million auction win yesterday.   • On Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Iowa running back Kaleb Johnson to a rookie contract. He spent three seasons at Iowa where he rushed for over 2,000 yards — the team did not disclose the deal's financial details.  PennLive
