COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Kennywood announced that its Steel Curtain will open for riders on May 24 at 11 a.m. Fans in the region have long awaited the ride’s return as the park prepares for the season.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • CitiParks Farmers Markets will return to Pittsburgh neighborhoods starting May 11 with four locations offering fresh, local goods and new community programming—Squirrel Hill will have a special Mother’s Day market and the North Side location will add a monthly beer garden. Shoppers using SNAP benefits will also get extra funds as grants boost purchasing power this season.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Allegheny High School's speech and debate team reached the top eight at the International Public Policy Forum Finals in New York City on May 3 — they beat hundreds of teams through rigorous essay rounds and tied the school record set in 2022. Four of the five team members were sophomores or juniors, and they plan to make another run at the world championship next year.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Gainey issued an executive order on May 8 to boost storm preparedness by unveiling the All-Hazard Mitigation Plan after a recent storm caused widespread power outages. The plan will have a 90-day review with public input and input from local, state — and federal officials to strengthen the city's climate resilience.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Frazer supervisors gave preliminary approval for Foxlane Homes’ senior housing project near Pittsburgh Mills mall while waiving two township requirements. The plan (designed for residents 55 and older) will develop 88 lots over 26 acres off Butler-Logan Road (with an estimated cost between $25 million and $30 million) and must meet additional conditions before final approval.  The Tribune-Review
  • After recent storms, some Pittsburgh residents say Duquesne Light’s power restoration process has left them frustrated as dispatch notices arrived too early and a fallen tree delayed repairs along Monitor Street — although 600 extra crews were deployed to help, delays persisted. State Rep. Mandy Steele plans a hearing on the utility’s response — neighbors urged steps like installing underground wiring to prevent similar issues in the future.  WTAE

SPORTS NEWS

  • ESPN’s Seth Walder said the Steelers’ defensive tackle Derrick Harmon was an early favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year after he led the FBS in pressure last season. Coach Mike Tomlin called Harmon a big man who can rush the pass and defend against the run — a comparison that has already linked him to Cam Heyward.  PennLive
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers traded wide receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick—he was not extended due to concerns over his behavior. Pickens now aims to prove himself in Dallas—his team reports he will not hold out and is ready to change his reputation.  PennLive
  • Don Kelly, a Butler native who briefly played for the Pirates in 2007, was named manager after former manager Derek Shelton was fired. He served as bench coach since 2020—he went to high school in Mt. Lebanon and attended Point Park University.  WTAE
