COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Pittsburgh residents can shop at three CitiParks farmers markets starting May, each offering fresh local produce and themed events. The Squirrel Hill market opens May 10 at the Beacon and Bartlett parking lot, Carrick on May 27 at 1529 Brownsville Rd, and Northside on May 29 at Allegheny Commons Park. WPXI
- ➤ Mayor Corey O'Connor and CitiParks announced nearly 300 chairs and loungers will be placed in city pools on June 15, the opening day. Families will access the new additions on a first-come, first-served basis while season passes are available at Oliver Bath House and other outdoor pool locations. WTAE

- ➤ Canon-McMillan School District will end Chromebook use for K-2 students today, saying they learn best from direct interaction (research supports the change). It also reinstates hardcover books and adjusts cellphone rules for older classes, while tech classes continue. KDKA
- ➤ On Wednesday, May 6, Pittsburgh Lincoln PreK-5 students braved rain to join the Walk and Roll to School event by walking, biking, and hoverboarding from Liberty Green Park to school, an effort that Principal Pamela Parks and Mayor Corey O’Connor say promotes safe, active transportation (supporting healthy habits). - ➤ High school seniors in Jeannette gained career skills and confidence at an etiquette dinner held Tuesday evening by the Jeannette Educational Foundation, Hoffman Wealth Management, and DeNunzio’s Restaurant. - ➤ Residents in Parks Township attended a meeting at the Volunteer Fire Department yesterday, where Army Corps officials explained the $500 million nuclear waste cleanup that began April 7 and detailed the excavation and safety process while some still asked for clearer emergency plans. - ➤ Pittsburgh's 2025 report showed a $44M deficit ($687M revenue, $732M spending). City Controller Rachael Heisler urged local investment to boost a market noted for affordable home buying. KDKA
- ➤ Officials proposed a $111.57M school budget that will raise the millage rate from 31.51 to 32.46, increasing taxes 3% (adding about $224 annually for a home assessed at $237,300). A final vote is scheduled at 7 p.m. June 8 at 1775 McLaughlin Run Road. The Tribune-Review
