  • A new memorial honoring 138 fallen firefighters was unveiled outside the Firefighters Union Hall on Saturday, May 2 + it pays tribute to their ultimate sacrifice.  WPXI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Airlines announced Saturday it is ceasing operations (after 34 years) and has canceled all flights at Pittsburgh International Airport. Passengers must contact other carriers for alternate booking options, with nonstop service available to Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, and Myrtle Beach.  WPXI
  • Spirit Airlines ended operations Saturday at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport after canceling all flights, leaving passengers to seek other travel options* Westmoreland County officials said the shutdown may affect local jobs and revenue as talks with new carriers continue during the $22 million terminal expansion project.  The Tribune-Review
  • Western PA airports informed passengers that Spirit Airlines ended operations immediately, urging them to use the airline’s website for flight updates. At Pittsburgh International, flyers were redirected to alternative carriers & Arnold Palmer Regional Airport is expected to lose its only commercial service ahead of a $22 million terminal expansion.  WTAE

CRIME NEWS

  • The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office said no charges will be filed for Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf after he shoved a Lions fan in Detroit last December; the decision follows a warrant request in January and leaves a *civil claim* of $100 million pending.  PennLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Chocolate makers and retailers in southwestern Pennsylvania are balancing social media fads with classic nostalgic favorites. Shops like Mon Aimee Chocolat (in Pittsburgh’s Strip District) and Kelly’s Sweets & Greets report that while Dubai chocolate is drawing attention, traditional treats continue to satisfy local tastes.  The Tribune-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting this fall, Pitt will cover remaining tuition for eligible Pennsylvania residents in its Regional Campus Tuition Pledge program at Bradford, Greensburg, Johnstown + the Titusville Nursing program; students earning $75,000 or less automatically qualify when filing FAFSA after federal, state and institutional aid are applied.  WPXI

  • All United States and Commonwealth flags will fly at half-staff today to honor Pennsylvania firefighters who died in the line of duty.  WPXI

  • Pittsburgh Water launched its new Pittsburgh Drinks Tap campaign to promote safe tap water and reassure residents about local water quality.  CBS Pittsburgh

SPORTS NEWS

  • Marathon weekend kicked off on the North Shore with Family Day races, including a 5K, Champions Mile, and Kids Marathon where runners supported causes such as breast cancer research and Alzheimer’s awareness. Cindy Davenport (a breast cancer survivor) finished her first run post-chemotherapy and raised over $6,000 for charity.  WTAE
  • Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin, facing free agency in July and turning 40 in August, said he is ready for one more season as GM Kyle Dubas rebuilds the team after a Game 6 postseason loss to Philadelphia. His role remains uncertain.  CBS Pittsburgh
