- ➤ New eateries have opened in Pittsburgh this April, with Dad’s Dog and Burger in Bloomfield serving up nostalgic comfort food and Hong Kong Dim Sum in Oakland offering a range of dumplings and pastries—each venue aims to bring unique local flavors to the table, while one by Spork in Garfield, Compass Coffee in Millvale, Cozy Baked Goods in Sharpsburg, Santo Coyote in Gibsonia, and Happenstance Cafe in Lawrenceville also add their own charm to the city’s food scene. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Westmoreland Conservation District staff worked past April 24 with high school senior Tim Miller and other Derry Area students at Twin Lakes Park east of Greensburg to study forest stewardship and bird research—activities that included soil testing and identifying birds. Derry Area will move on to the statewide Envirothon competition on May 21 at Windber Park in Somerset County—where teams will further test their conservation skills. The Tribune-Review

- ➤ Four candidates are running for Pittsburgh mayor with the primary election set for May 20; current Mayor Ed Gainey, Controller Corey O'Connor, retired officer Tony Moreno, and businessman Thomas West each share plans to improve affordable housing, public safety, and economic development. The candidates participated in a debate on April 22 and will face additional debates as they outline their strategies for the city's future. WTAE
- ➤ Overnight closures will occur on the Pennsylvania Turnpike between Pittsburgh and Irwin for upkeep work including drain cleaning, roadway sealing and sweeping — detour routes have been set. The westbound lane will close on April 27 from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m. — while the eastbound lane will close during those hours on May 4 as crews complete scheduled maintenance. WPXI

- ➤ Today, Acrisure Stadium hosts Supercross for the first time in over 40 years as tens of thousands of fans are expected to watch the off-road motorcycle race; Monster Energy Supercross moved 26 million pounds of dirt to prepare the track — opening ceremonies start at 6:30 p.m. with the race at 7 p.m. KDKA
- ➤ A pending court settlement may let Division I colleges pay athletes up to $20.5 million a year using tuition and tax dollars. Some students and lawyers worry this plan will shift costs onto families—especially as schools deal with large deficits. WTAE
