CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday a Pittsburgh woman suffered burns to 60% of her body during an attack at a home on Clayton Avenue in Perry South when 55-year-old Burton Byrd allegedly accused her of cheating, tied her hands, punched her, struck her with a belt, and burned her with a hot clothes iron—police report that he did not let her leave for three days and now faces charges of aggravated assault and kidnapping.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Heinz History Center has opened an exhibit called 'Pittsburgh's Hidden History' that shows rare local items such as the Biddle sleigh—an artifact often compared to Santa's famous sleigh. The display offers visitors a new look at our city's long-held secrets.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Downtown Pittsburgh is changing as demolition began at 8th Street and Penn Avenue to clear the space for Arts Landing— a $35 million, four-acre project with groundbreaking set for next week. Upgrades include $3.4 million in repairs for Point State Park and a $16 million renovation of Market Square to improve public spaces ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.  WTAE
  • Allegheny County DHS launched its new Mobile Competency Restoration and Support Team (MCRST) to offer mental health treatment and educational support for jail detainees found not competent to stand trial. The program, operated by Centurion Health in partnership with local courts, is expected to cut the 81-day wait for treatment previously seen at Torrance State Hospital.  Allegheny County
  • Pittsburgh’s police union will not join contract talks until the chief official in the process is removed; FOP President Bob Swartzwelder sent a letter to Mayor Ed Gainey asking for Lisa Frank's removal due to 2020 tweets on police defunding—Frank stated her views have since evolved.  KDKA

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Steelers plan to trade down in the 2025 NFL Draft if they do not find a prospect they love at No. 21, said GM Omar Khan—coach Mike Tomlin added that, with only six picks, staying put or moving back is a better option.  PennLive
  • Pittsburgh hotels and short-term rental hosts are getting ready for the NFL draft that will bring hundreds of thousands of visitors. Experts say there are 19,000 hotel rooms in Allegheny County — 35,000 including nearby areas — so more hosting options may be needed to fill in the gap.  WTAE
  • Today the Steelers are set to make their first-round NFL Draft pick—sources say they are considering Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant, or Shedeur Sanders, with Harmon slightly favored despite his shoulder issue. The team is also watching trade interest in receiver George Pickens and does not plan to extend his contract, keeping its options open.  PennLive
