  • Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin donated $35,500 on Wednesday as part of his I’m Score for Kids initiative and local McDonald’s matched his gift to total $71,000 for Ronald McDonald House in Lawrenceville—supporting families with sick children stay close to hospital care.  WPXI

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A resident of Allegheny County purchased a Cash 5 ticket worth $2.2 million Tuesday at a Sunoco station on Arlington Avenue (with winning numbers 2, 14, 18, 23, 29) that earned the station a $10,000 bonus (as commission).  KDKA

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A study by the American Lung Association found the Pittsburgh metro area ranked 16th worst for daily particle pollution and 12th worst for year-round pollution. Data from 2021 to 2023 shows Allegheny County’s average particle level was 11.6 micrograms per cubic meter—well above the federal standard of 9—for high-risk groups like children, seniors, and people with heart or lung conditions.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Allegheny County Council approved two ordinances—one to accept a USGA donation for security and another to allow shuttle parking at Hartwood Acres—as work on pavilions and course structures continues at Oakmont Country Club for the upcoming U.S. Open, which is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors and boost the local economy by up to $50 million.  WTAE
  • Pittsburgh’s police union said it will not join contract talks until the city removes Chief Operating Officer Lisa Frank—tweets from 2020 called for cutting police funding. The union said it learned the April 23 meeting was cancelled without explanation and will move to arbitration if a new representative is named.  WPXI
  • After a large crack was found in the pier supporting the North Side HOV lanes earlier this year, PennDOT began inspecting several vintage piers—temporary supports were installed on the Veterans Bridge, which carries about 65,000 vehicles per day. Engineers are assessing repair needs and expect the HOV lane to Bedford Avenue may reopen by the end of May.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • South Park’s Lady Eagles softball team is enjoying an undefeated season as they work to overcome last year’s near-miss in winning the WPIAL title— the team builds on its strong early performance.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The Pittsburgh Pirates said that fans who attended the game on April 19th at PNC Park and did not receive a Paul Skenes bobblehead have been emailed a voucher in their MLB Ballpark App to claim one - the team added that additional bobbleheads will be available soon and fans with paper tickets should call or email for details.  WTAE
