  • Kennywood opens today as Phantom’s Revenge (25 years) and The Whip (100 years) mark major milestones with ride updates and new food options like cheesesteaks at Centennial Grill and ice cream at Big Dipper.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • The Pittsburgh Zoo euthanized its 30-year-old eastern black rhinoceros Jomo on Thursday. The beloved resident had been treated for age-related issues and arrived in 1996 (siring two daughters), making him a local favorite.  WTAE
  • Preeti Tuli has opened Bubs' Lounge beside her restaurant, Preeti's Pitt, on Penn Avenue to honor her late son, Ahmir Tuli, who was shot outside the family business in February 2021. The Strip District venue will serve as an NFL draft vendor and begin regular hours next Wednesday.  WTAE

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Painted Tree Boutiques in Homestead closed Tuesday at The Waterfront as part of a chain-wide shutdown. Vendors have until April 24 to pick up their inventory from the only Pennsylvania store that had been open for more than two years after previously operating as a Bed Bath and Beyond site.  The Tribune-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Arts Landing, a four-acre outdoor civic space between 8th & 9th on Penn Ave to Fort Duquesne Blvd, held its ribbon cutting on Apr. 17 and will host a Pitt Block Party during the NFL Draft ahead of a June Grand Opening at the Three Rivers Arts Festival.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • UPMC Presbyterian Hospital is constructing the $1.3 billion Daniel G. and Carole L. Kamin Tower in Oakland. The 17-story building will offer 636 private patient rooms + 11 operating rooms and a 450-vehicle parking garage, and it will begin moving patients in January 2027.  WTAE

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Gordo’s Cafe & Cantina in RIDC Park, O’Hara now offers a cantina menu with new dinner hours featuring scratch-made Southwestern dishes and cocktails, plus indoor seating and plans for an outdoor fire pit. Owner Brian Gorder and GM Jennifer Hamman say the updated service aims to attract local families.  The Tribune-Review

  • The NFL Draft will spotlight Western Pennsylvania’s rich football history next week as Steelers President Art Rooney II and museum staff invite visitors to tour local landmarks (from the Immaculate Reception Monument on the North Shore to Oakland’s Forbes Field wall).   • The Pirates split the four-game series with the Nationals—winning game one 16-5, losing game two 5-4, winning game three 2-0, and falling in extra innings in game four—and will face the Tampa Bay Rays Friday night at PNC Park as part of their seven-game homestand.  The Pitt News
