CRIME NEWS

  • Former corporate lawyer James France, 62, from Scott Township was sentenced to over 12.5 years in prison — he will also serve eight years of supervised release after being found guilty in March 2022 of distributing meth.  WPXI
  • A Sewickley man was detained at Pittsburgh International Airport on Wednesday after TSA officers found his 22-caliber pistol with 30 rounds in his carry-on—he said he forgot about the weapon, police confiscated it and later released him, and he may face a civil penalty of up to $15,000.  The Tribune-Review
  • Pennsylvania State Police reported that a woman was killed in a Butler County home — a suspect connected to the incident was found dead in Beaver County.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Thursday, Pittsburgh professors, union members and leaders gathered in Schenley Plaza to support higher education and protest federal actions that cut research funding and threatened academic freedom—over 200 people joined the National Day of Action organized by the Coalition for Action in Higher Education and the AAUP, and speakers warned that reduced funding endangers research programs and jobs.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Thursday morning, Pittsburgh officials launched a new online affordable housing tracker — the tool shows parts of the city’s affordable housing developments to help residents see where projects are planned. The tracker will be updated as new developments are announced.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • The city of Pittsburgh today unveiled an interactive mapping tool that shows affordable housing projects completed, under construction, in process, or in the pipeline from 2022-2024. Mayor Ed Gainey said the tool aims to boost accountability and transparency by displaying data on about 1,600 completed, under construction, or in-process units and roughly 1,200 units still in the pipeline.  WTAE

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nationals pitcher Jorge López was suspended three games and fined after his high inside pitch nearly hit Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen and caused benches to clear during the game on April 16th—he later filed an appeal while Nationals manager Dave Martinez was fined and suspended a game.  PennLive
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins will miss the playoffs for the third straight year as captain Sidney Crosby, age 37, averages a point a game and leads practices at UMPC Lemieux Sports Complex. General manager Kyle Dubas said draft picks will help rebuild the team while Crosby — who signed an extension through 2027 — stays a steady role model for his teammates.  WTAE
  • At a warehouse in the Strip District, organizers are preparing for the largest Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon ever — the facility has stocked supplies like cups, safety pins, water, T-shirts and banners. Senior vice president Brian Schmidt explained that the warehouse holds 480,000 cups, 168,000 safety pins, 20,000 gallons of water, 45,000 T-shirts and over 1,000 signs; marathon weekend will be May 3-4 and planning for next year will begin days after the race ends.  WTAE
