COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Local group Black Urban Gardeners and Farmers of Pittsburgh, known as BUGS, has added beekeeping in Homewood and will offer classes starting in May where residents learn to care for hives and later buy local honey that may ease coughs and support heart health+ the program also includes chicken keeping classes this season. Executive director Raqueeb Bey and bee expert Maurice Wofford said the classes will help build skills for self sufficiency in a neighborhood that has not had a grocery store since 1994+ the initiative is expected to boost local food production and improve community health. - ➤ A search warrant revealed that Jennah Seibert’s fiancé called emergency responders last week after finding her dead upstairs in their home on Lenity School Road—he said her throat was cut with his knife, their car was stolen, and the power was cut, though the district attorney reported she suffered a gunshot wound and investigators later saw the stolen Lexus on surveillance cameras in Monongahela at 9:15 a.m. WTAE

- ➤ This weekend in Pittsburgh offers a range of activities as locals can visit an artist residency exhibition opening tonight—'On the Edge Of' at Brew House Arts—and join a dance party supporting reproductive health at Spirit. Other events include a poetry performance at the August Wilson African American Cultural Center Friday, a history hike in the West End and a play honoring a local sports icon Sunday. NEXTpittsburgh
- ➤ Streaming services are growing while movie theaters have less work, changing how films are made in Pittsburgh. Dawn Keezer from the Pittsburgh Film Office said streaming shows give local crews longer work periods—while high production costs pushed some films to Canada, theaters still struggle to draw families. - ➤ Experts say that although Pittsburgh—known as a climate haven—has a safe reputation, the city faces challenges from heavy floods, frequent tornadoes, and rising air pollution. They warn that old infrastructure and a flat tax base may make it hard to protect Pittsburgh from future climate change. Pittsburgh City Paper

- ➤ On Tuesday morning, PennDOT closed the Center Avenue bridge between Nevins Lane and Walker Road in Elizabeth and Forward Townships for repairs until August due to a failing utility line that made the structure unstable. Residents said they received no notice and now face a detour that adds about 15—20 minutes to their trips. WTAE
- ➤ Meredith Buettner Schneider—executive director of the Pennsylvania Cannabis Coalition—said state legislators are weighing a plan to legalize adult-use cannabis that could boost tax revenue and improve regulation for safe products. She noted that while local cannabis is produced entirely in-state, proposed tariffs on imported production materials may increase costs and lawmakers are expected to address the issue during upcoming budget talks or later in the session.
