- ➤ Effective May 4, the Maryland-based nonprofit Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism (the institute behind The Baltimore Banner) will take over the Post-Gazette after Block Communications announced its last edition would run on May 3; the paper’s newsroom and leadership will remain local as operations merge with new teams. - ➤ South Hills Village Mall in Bethel Park will add new retailers and upgrade several areas; Abercrombie & Fitch, Madewell, Rowan, and Swarovski are set to open from Spring 2026 to 2027, with improvements including painting, new flooring, updated entrances, and renovated restrooms (details confirmed by mall management). - ➤ The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin a half-billion-dollar cleanup at a decades-old nuclear waste dump in Apollo today. They will remove contaminated soil and drums safely to storage in Utah & install air monitors and a water treatment plant to protect neighbors. CBS Pittsburgh

- ➤ Pitt researchers said NASA’s Artemis II mission, which launched April 1 and returned April 10, advanced biomedical & earth science research to help improve health on Earth. They viewed the mission as a key test of technology that will shape future deep space efforts. The Pitt News
- ➤ Shaler installed a dozen advanced AEDs in 10 parks (including Kiwanis Park and Tim Rogers Field, which has year-round access) on Tuesday, April 14. The devices alert Allegheny County 911 and come with Narcan and Stop the Bleed kits while Shaler Hampton EMS will offer free CPR classes this summer. The Tribune-Review

- ➤ The Pirates beat the Nationals 16-5 on Monday night—Paul Skenes allowed one hit in six innings while Brandon Lowe homered for his third game in two, driving in five runs. The team will face Nationals RHP Miles Mikolas on Tuesday. WTAE
- ➤ Carnegie Mellon University hosts a Special Olympics competition on April 18 at Geslignt Stadium, with over 600 athletes competing in basketball, track, and swimming (supported by 250 volunteers and 200 coaches).
