  • Jilly’s Cafe food truck will open April 19 at Burrell Plaza on Leechburg Road to serve fresh deli sandwiches, wraps and salads, plus a dine-and-donate event supporting local school softball teams. Jill Sheerer will operate it at the Lower Burrell Farmers Market and neighborhood events through the warmer months.  The Tribune-Review
  • More than 60 volunteers repelled down a 21-story building today in a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. The event supports mentoring programs and raises funds for local children.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Military veteran Donald Wyckoff has turned his Hot Wheels customization hobby into a full-time business at his Mt. Pleasant home. After leaving law enforcement amid PTSD, he uses 3D printers and custom painting techniques to create personalized collectibles that bring joy to collectors.  The Tribune-Review
  • After months of road closures along Fifth Avenue near PPG Paints Arena, Pizza Bosa and Cafe Fifth Avenue report rising sales. They expect the Penguins playoffs + NFL Draft + a new concert venue opening in October to boost foot traffic.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 20th annual Three Rivers Community Band Festival took place Saturday at Franklin Regional High School. Over 100 musicians from 62 groups formed a festival band that rehearsed, performed and disbanded for the love of community music.  The Tribune-Review
  • Noah Wyle, star of the local drama The Pitt, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 11. His close ties to Pittsburgh were celebrated as friends joined him at the ceremony — marking a proud moment for our community.  CBS Pittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pittsburgh-area high school carpentry students will tour the NFL Draft stage building on the North Shore Wednesday to gain hands-on experience and network with craftsmen ahead of the NFL Draft set for April 23-25. Michael Brink called the visit a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity (bridging classroom lessons with real-world work).  The Tribune-Review
  • Franklin Regional’s 2026 Student Visionaries team raised $157K in seven weeks through creative fundraisers like hoagie sales and a cake-decorating class to support blood cancer research at the school (inspired by classmate Luca Bertucci who overcame Burkitt’s lymphoma).  The Tribune-Review

HEALTH NEWS

  • A minimart on E Warrington Avenue in Allentown received a second consumer alert after inspectors found over a dozen violations including chewed food and droppings on April 8. The market will be reinspected in 10 days and may be ordered closed if the issues are not corrected.  WPXI

SPORTS NEWS

  • Crews have begun construction at Point State Park as part of preparations for the NFL Draft Experience, resulting in partial park closures today for the upcoming event.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not confirmed his return as the Steelers plan for the season+running back Jaylen Warren said he supports whoever takes command as the team moves into the offseason amid roster uncertainty.  PennLive
  • Ilya Protas scored his first NHL goal and added two assists as the Washington Capitals beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-3 on Saturday, Apr. 11. The Penguins rested key players after clinching a playoff berth, leaving Sidney Crosby off the ice while rookie Ryan Leonard reached a 20-goal milestone.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • After North Dakota lost in the Frozen Four semifinal to Wisconsin, the Penguins signed free agent defenseman Jake Livanavage to a two-year entry-level contract that begins immediately, per GM Kyle Dubas. Livanavage, 21, will soon report to Pittsburgh.  WPXI
