CULTURE NEWS

  • The August Wilson Society hosted its Biennial Colloquium at Hillman Library from April 2 to April 5 to honor Pittsburgh icon August Wilson with guest speeches and viewings of his personal items. The society will honor his 80th birthday with an induction on April 26 – marking ongoing efforts to preserve his legacy – as educators and local artists joined the event.  The Pitt News
  • The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announced Monday that the 2025-2026 PNC Broadway season will feature 11 shows at the Benedum Center starting September 9 — season tickets are on sale and details for individual shows will be shared soon.  WTAE
  • Ambridge is a small town 16 miles northwest of Pittsburgh that offers world cuisine and a rich history from its steel mill days. The borough plans park upgrades and streetscape renovations with a ribbon cutting set for Rocktober Fest—the weekend of Sept. 20.  NEXTpittsburgh

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On March 26, Forbes named the University of Pittsburgh a 'New Ivy,' making it the only public school in Pennsylvania among 10 that met strict enrollment and test score rules. Provost Joseph McCarthy said the honor shows Pitt's strong focus on research and academic excellence—helping its students gain a boost with future employers.  The Pitt News
  • Rumors of ICE arriving at Pitt circulated on March 26 amid national concerns about deportations of foreign nationals, but University officials confirmed no ICE presence on campus as of Monday, Apr. 7—student leaders are coordinating resources for affected groups—as local organizations call for direct outreach.  The Pitt News
  • Graduating Pitt students face an uncertain future amid a slowing economy and political challenges as their commencement on May 4 approaches—some have secured nursing jobs locally or in Washington while others plan gap years as they worry about rising costs and policy changes. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An independent poll by AARP that surveyed 805 voters 50 and older in Pittsburgh shows challenger Corey O’Connor leads Mayor Ed Gainey 58% to 24% ahead of the May primary—poll data was collected between March 12 and 19.  WPXI
  • Dozens of residents joined long lines on Monday at the Allison Park Driver’s License Center to get REAL IDs before enforcement starts on May 7. Some waited more than an hour and officials said to bring required documents and a $30 fee in addition to the regular renewal charge.  WPXI

HEALTH NEWS

  • Allegheny County officials and public health leaders celebrated the opening of a new 40,000 square foot Public Health Laboratory at 119 Commonwealth Drive—built with advanced equipment for faster, more accurate diagnostic testing—and a planned boost in capacity from 50,000 to 400,000 tests per year. County Health Director Dr. Iulia Vann said all equipment would be fully installed by the end of June.  WTAE
