COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction began on Tuesday on the $16 million renovation of Market Square aimed at modernizing infrastructure, adding better lighting, more power sources and expanded outdoor seating for restaurants; the project will occur in two phases while keeping pedestrian access and is expected to be completed by April for the NFL Draft in 2026 — local business and community leaders say the upgrade will boost downtown vibrancy.  WTAE

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 1, a portion of Grant Street in Downtown Pittsburgh was closed after manhole covers were blown off and smoke was seen coming from underground—workers said several buildings shook while they were inside.  WPXI

  • Slice on Broadway was named the World's Best Cheese Slice at the 2025 International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas yesterday as chef Chris Ostapenko led the contest from a third-place finish to a final round victory—earning the restaurant global acclaim.  WPXI
  • Experts in Las Vegas awarded Slice on Broadway the World’s Best Cheese Slice at Pizza Expo last week, and owner Rico Lunardi said the win shows his team’s careful work with dough, sauce and cheese has brought new customers to its six local locations.  KDKA

CRIME NEWS

  • Ryan Wilson, 28, assaulted his pregnant girlfriend and her pregnant cousin at a home on Mount Pleasant Road in Northview Heights—both women were taken to the hospital and he faces several charges including two counts of felony assault of an unborn child.  WTAE
  • An Allegheny County man—Shakeirs Foster, 27—was charged with drug delivery resulting in death and sexual extortion after investigators linked him to providing fentanyl that killed a 15-year-old girl on May 14.  WPXI
  • Officers responded to a 10-round ShotSpotter alert at around 2 a.m. on the 7300 block of Monticello Street in Homewood North where first responders found a man with multiple gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead—another man with similar injuries was taken to UPMC Shadyside and later moved to a trauma center with a critical but stable condition.  KDKA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction on the Market Square modernization project will begin Tuesday in downtown Pittsburgh and continue for a year as crews improve public spaces ahead of the NFL Draft while traffic patterns change in the area.  WPXI

  • After suffering a dislocated knee in 2023 and missing all of 2024, Steelers linebacker Cole Holcomb returned to practice late last year and is expected to be fully ready for training camp in 2025—his contract was reworked in March to secure his comeback.   PennLive
