COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City crews and community volunteers are cleaning and beautifying Market Square and Downtown ahead of the NFL Draft scheduled for April 23-25. The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership’s Clean Team and extra temporary staff are working hard so the city looks its best when fans arrive.  The Tribune-Review
  • Allegheny Riverfront Park is nearly complete after a $5.4 million renovation that added 35 trees, durable pavers and new lights to boost its event capacity in downtown. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for Thursday morning before upcoming Pirates and NFL Draft events.  The Tribune-Review
  • Lisa Freeman has opened a neat general store on a former industrial lot in Manchester that once housed a deteriorating warehouse, offering a welcoming space & fueling neighborhood renewal.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
  • Pittsburgh City Paper was acquired by LocalMatters on March 19 and will return soon as a free monthly publication in print and online. Nearly 1,000 readers have joined and former staff and students see the relaunch as a hopeful boost for local journalism.  The Pitt News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A day after a Sunday morning fire gutted half a duplex in New Kensington, residents are recovering from injuries while firefighters controlled the blaze before it spread further — community members and local organizations are donating essentials and offering temporary shelter as families rebuild.  The Tribune-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Former Pitt chancellor Mark Nordenberg, who has served nearly 50 years, will deliver the commencement address on May 3 at Acrisure Stadium and will retire on June 30, with leadership passed to Samantha Balbier and Paul Supowitz.  University Times
  • At Pitt, new international student numbers fell 4% for fall, dropping from 709 to 679 with a total enrollment of 2,711, while national student visas declined 35.6% from June to August 2025 due to a visa freeze & recruitment teams continue reaching key global markets to boost enrollment.  The Pitt News
