ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ During a busy St. Patrick’s Day party on March 14, the porch roof on Semple Street collapsed—hospitalizing 16 people and injuring at least a dozen others while emergency responders quickly arrived. The Pitt News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police say Rashon Coleman, 31, of East Liberty robbed banks on April 10th, 2023 for $904 and on April 11th, 2023 for $4,344 using a toy gun, and after leaving a detention facility on May 20th, 2023 he robbed a bank for $25,000 before being caught—he was sentenced to over nine years in prison with three years of supervised release. - ➤ A youth football treasurer, 41-year-old Jaella Richard (of Bridgeville), was arrested and charged after police said she allegedly stole $64,742.75 from the South Fayette Township Youth Football Association when bank statements showed a balance of only $745.52. WTAE
- ➤ A man was arrested after police said he threw a 10-month-old puppy down a flight of stairs during a fight at a home in Aliquippa+ the puppy died and he now faces charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and neglect of animals. WPXI
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Pittsburgh Public Schools announced they have received their first electric school buses as part of an effort to update student transportation — the district said the buses will begin service today. CBS Pittsburgh
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Local lawmakers won bipartisan support for the CROWN Act, a bill that would ban hair-based discrimination, after it passed the state House on March 17th with a vote of 194 to 8—its final vote is set for the next two weeks. Pittsburgh City Paper
- ➤ The City of Pittsburgh is recruiting lifeguards to staff CitiParks pools for a safe summer — the program will offer certification training and wages from $17.48 to $20.16 per hour for workers 15 and older, while Mayor Ed Gainey urged residents to share this opportunity. WPXI
- ➤ PennDOT will cross eastbound traffic into the westbound lanes on I-376 in Monroeville starting Saturday—creating two lanes per direction in the westbound lanes until mid-July. Prep work begins Friday at 9 p.m. between Penn Hills and Monroeville and crews will demolish the bridge over Old William Penn Highway next week—so drivers should expect delays this weekend. WTAE
