ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A child was hit by a PRT bus in the Hill District and remains in stable condition — Port Authority Police are investigating the incident.  CBS Pittsburgh

CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities intensified the search for Pitt student Sudiksha Konanki, who vanished before dawn on March 6 in Punta Cana, after a man last seen with her was questioned on Monday and his attorney requested his release—Joshua Riibe has been detained by Dominican police while a judge is expected to rule on his release today.  WPXI
  • A Pittsburgh man who yelled at a group breaking into cars in Regent Square was shot after the group fired back—police say he was trying to stop a robbery—and an investigation is underway.  WPXI
  • A Clairton man remains in jail after being charged with shooting someone early Sunday during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in Pittsburgh’s South Side—police say he fired multiple shots near a parked Dodge Charger at about 2:45 a.m., the victim was shot in the buttocks and taken to UPMC Mercy while he faces multiple charges with bail set at $50,000 and a preliminary hearing on March 25.  The Tribune-Review

CULTURE NEWS

  • Student artists and community artist Alison Zapata began painting a large mural at Hillman Library to show the history of communication and mark the library renovation. The painting will finish in April and be revealed to the Pitt community in the fall semester — eight students were selected from 107 applicants to help create the work.  The Pitt News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt’s Campus Recreation Center is hosting its second annual EmpowHER series of wellness events to celebrate Women’s History Month and help women feel safe joining athletic programs. The series includes a self-defense class on March 22 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Trees Hall—HerStory Slam is set for March 25 at 6 p.m. in the Connolly Ballroom.  The Pitt News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Regional Transit is facing a $100 million deficit for next year and will propose service cuts and fare hikes at its board meeting on Thursday—state funds have not grown in over ten years. Many riders worry these changes may make it harder to get to work.  WTAE

  • Restaurants in Pittsburgh are offering St. Patrick’s Day deals that include discounts on food and free items with qualifying purchases—promotions use special codes and vary by restaurant.  WPXI

  • Free agent quarterback Russell Wilson said he wants to re-sign with the Steelers after trips to the Browns and Giants—his move will depend on whether Aaron Rodgers stays with the team.  PennLive
  • The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran cornerback Darius Slay to a one-year deal to add experience to their secondary, though analyst Marcus Mosher called the move a short-term fix—Slay will be 35 by season end.
