  • The Fresh Market is opening its first Pittsburgh store on March 18 at a former Whole Foods (vacated since 2022) in Shadyside. Doors open at 7 a.m. with a ribbon cutting scheduled at 8:30 a.m. and food samples, giveaways and a happy hour will follow.  KDKA
  • At 380 Auction in Murrysville, a fire on Monday — damaging three greenhouses, forklifts and supplies — was contained by firefighters who kept the flames from reaching the main building. Co-owner Jim Beacom said strong community support helped the business as it works to rebuild.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • VisitPittsburgh supports the launch of the MixBurgh Foundation — a new collaboration among local bars and distilleries aiming to boost the city's cocktail scene. The initiative was announced Tuesday, March 10.  WPXI

ECONOMY NEWS

  • SmartAsset’s study released on Tuesday, March 10 shows that a $100,000 income has varying purchasing power across U.S. cities, with Pittsburgh’s value at $76,064 + a 25.2% effective tax rate. The study highlights that taxes and living costs are reshaping how far dollars stretch nationwide.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Burrell High School senior Lily Sassani created a Holocaust education patch showing Girl Scouts' role during the Holocaust and will display it at the Tri-City Historical Society in New Kensington from March 12 through mid-April. She spent two years researching+ writing and interviewing to produce the project.  The Tribune-Review

  • A locally sold jackpot-winning Cash 5 ticket in southwestern Pennsylvania will expire soon — winners must check tickets to claim the prize before the deadline.  WPXI

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT announced that the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge will close at 10 a.m. Saturday until March 14 for construction work + posted detours guide motorists along South Duquesne Boulevard while sidewalks remain open for pedestrians.  WTAE

HEALTH NEWS

  • UPMC Magee-Womens nurses called for standardized staffing ratios on Tuesday in Oakland. They asked UPMC leadership to align nurse-to-patient ratios with local hospitals - a shift expected to improve patient care and reduce nurse burnout.  CBS Pittsburgh

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Steelers re-signed defensive tackle Esezi Otomewo after he played 12 games last season with nine tackles, one sack and one quarterback hit. The 6 ft 5 in, 282 lb player is expected to build on his three-sack preseason performance to strengthen the team’s rotation.  PennLive
  • Former Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers worth up to $7.5 million. The Pitt first-round pick, joining his fifth NFL team after a season with the Raiders and Eagles, will prepare to compete for a starting role.  PennLive
