ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Rocks fell from a hillside on Wednesday, Feb. 18, forcing officials to close PJ McArdle at 10:57 a.m.* and safety checks remain underway to secure the area.  WPXI
  • Pennsylvania has led the nation in home fire deaths this year with 26 fatalities, including incidents in Pittsburgh, Braddock, and Penn Township, as Fire Chief Brandon Schmidt urged homeowners to test smoke detectors (and store lithium-ion battery devices safely) to help prevent future tragedies.  CBS Pittsburgh

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Booz Allen Hamilton inked an agreement to acquire Defy Security, a cybersecurity firm based in Canonsburg employing around 100 staff across Southpointe + San Ramon. The deal will position Booz Allen to expand its cyber solutions for global clients.  WPXI

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richard Palmer from Carnegie Mellon's CREATE Lab is using a Gigapan robot camera to capture high-resolution images of more than 200 city murals and public artworks. Begun in 2021, the project preserves details that may be lost when buildings change — a living archive of community art.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • Later this month, Culturvate Enterprises launches the Cultural Movement History and Heritage Tour along the Hill District on Feb. 28. The guided bus tour celebrates Black Pittsburgh with stops at the August Wilson House and New Pittsburgh Courier, featuring music and trivia to share local history in a joyful way.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • Pitt Athletics and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust will host a three-day Pitt Block Party from April 23 to 25 at Arts Landing (a planned civic space in the Cultural District) to offer live music, food trucks and an interactive NFL Draft showcase for local fans.  WPXI
  • The Carnegie Museum of Art said 61 artists and art groups will take part in the 59th Carnegie International, an exhibition that starts May 2 and runs through January 3, 2027 — marking its return as the oldest North American showcase of contemporary art.  WPXI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools board met Tuesday night to revisit its Future Ready Plan that would consolidate more than a dozen schools after a similar proposal was rejected in November (Gene Walker said the board wants to address the missing elements). The board will wait for a timeline from the superintendent and meet again in March or April.  WPXI

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Feb. 18, Three Rivers Waterkeeper found that PFAS levels in Montour Run near Pittsburgh International Airport greatly exceed EPA standards, with some readings thousands of times higher. The group is working with the state's Department of Environmental Protection to limit exposure + safeguard water quality.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Pittsburgh-area Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen on William Penn Highway in Wilkins Township was ordered closed on Feb. 13 when a roof leak was found above its walk-in cooler, risking food safety. The Allegheny County Health Department has listed the closure on its website and noted that repairs are in progress.  KDKA

  • Penguins captain Sidney Crosby limped into the locker room after taking three hard hits (favoring his right leg) during Canada’s Olympic quarterfinal game against Czechia. It is unclear if he will return to play.  WPXI
