COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Pittsburgh shelters and local groups are adding over 200 beds and extra support during winter to help more than 1,000 unhoused people. A winter shelter on Maple Avenue offers meals and safe overnight space until April 30 (providing cold weather health and clothing resources across the city).  The Pitt News
  • Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor honored Bobbi Valentine, a crossing guard who served for nearly 40 years in Carrick, as he acknowledged ongoing efforts to improve school zone safety & traffic-calming measures in the city.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium broke ground on an $18 million giraffe barn that will house up to six giraffes and offer year-round care, with the facility set to open in spring. The project is part of a larger master plan and is funded by private donations & public support.  WPXI

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Battery 13 at U.S. Steel's Clairton Coke Works will restart tomorrow — coke production will resume the following day — after repairs were completed from an Aug. explosion that killed two people six months ago.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Paczki are now on bakery shelves in Pittsburgh as part of the seasonal celebration rooted in the city’s Polish heritage. Custard Prison will host a pop-up at Polska Laska in Sharpsburg on Feb. 17 with $1 from each paczki sale benefiting Casa San Jose.  NEXTpittsburgh
  • Filming for the final season of Mayor of Kingstown will begin March 9 in Pittsburgh and run through the summer. Jeremy Renner+Edie Falco star as local extras are still being cast at landmarks like Millvale, McKeesport, and the 16th Street Bridge.  KDKA

  • A ramp to downtown was closed yesterday for an emergency water main repair, and officials said the work may delay access until repairs are complete.  WPXI

  • Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania will soon host fish fries every Friday during Lent for nearly six weeks. Action News 4 is collecting submissions from churches + community groups to create a guide with the best fish fry locations for locals.  WTAE
