  • Marc Fogel, a Pittsburgh native, was released from Russian custody today and is now aboard a flight heading home from Moscow. After more than three years of detention, he will soon be reuniting with his family.  The Tribune-Review
  • On Jan. 29, local journalists and community leaders launched the Pittsburgh Alliance for People-Empowered Reporting after the Post-Gazette announced it will close on May 3, aiming to preserve journalism jobs and improve coverage of underserved communities with a hoped-for opening around May 4.  The Pitt News

  • A North Side AI inventory tracking company raised $40 million in Series B funding led by San Francisco-based Smith Point Capital + the company will use the funds to expand warehouse operations and enhance its AI technology.  Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

  • Gov. Shapiro's proposed budget keeps PASSHE funding flat at $625 million for 10 state colleges, leaving tuition decisions pending until the board meets in July (officials will review enrollment and state negotiations before finalizing rates).  The Tribune-Review

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Pittsburgh's three rivers and Lake Erie are covered in ice that reached five to eight inches during 18 days of bitter cold; a gradual thaw starting today should ease potential ice jams and flooding as Action Weather Meteorologist Jill Szwed explained that a slow warm-up will keep river flows safe in coming days.  WTAE
