COMMUNITY NEWS

  • After a Greyhound bus dropped 31-year-old Dre Pankey in downtown, he found refuge at a North Side school shelter when 14 inches of snow hit on Jan. 25; the shelter later provided beds for 146 residents & officials continue to meet rising needs.  The Tribune-Review

BUSINESS NEWS

  • U.S. Steel said battery 13 at the Clairton Coke Plant will restart today after repairs following an August explosion that killed 2 and injured several. Production will resume tomorrow as the company has informed the County Health Department (its safe restart plan is now in place).  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • Production for the final season of 'Mayor of Kingstown' begins in early March in the Pittsburgh area as casting opens for extras in roles such as law enforcement and bar patrons, with filming set to continue through June.  KDKA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Westmoreland County Community College approved a two-year engineering program along with the opening of its MADE makerspace at Hempfield Business and Industry Center—built to let students gain foundational skills before transferring to local four-year schools. The program will start in August.  The Tribune-Review
  • Pitt plans to convert a parking lot at Fifth and Ruskin into a new first-year residence hall to house about 400 students, with plans to add a dining facility and showers. Construction will begin this summer and finish by summer 2028 after three design-build teams pitch on Feb. 10.  The Pitt News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT crews are working to push hard-packed snowbanks out of highway driving lanes after last weekend's storm dropped over 10 inches of snow. Officials say crews continuously monitor snow accumulation — six miles took a week to clear — and advise drivers to reduce speed on tight road sections.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Pittsburgh researcher Juliane Beier leads a five-year, $10 million NIH study on health effects from vinyl chloride after the East Palestine derailment. An office opened Tuesday in East Palestine to enroll up to 550 participants, with follow-ups until 2029 (liver and thyroid tests target potential damage).  The Tribune-Review

  • A Lions fan is suing Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf, the team & Ford Field Management for $100 million over an altercation during a Dec. 21 game at Ford Field. He denies using racial slurs and seeks on-record retractions to clear his name.  PennLive
  • Connor Hennick, a 14-year-old Steelers fan, is heading to San Francisco for the Super Bowl trip provided by Make-A-Wish and Fanatics. He will receive red carpet treatment, including NFL Honors and special surprise events over five days, fulfilling his lifelong dream despite his neuromuscular disorder.  WTAE
  • A WalletHub study ranked Pittsburgh as the top city for football fans based on NFL team presence and championship wins (the Steelers' six Super Bowl victories boost local pride) among 253 cities. The findings highlight strong community engagement at Acrisure Stadium.  PennLive
  • Brian Angelichio, the Vikings tight ends coach, is the leading candidate for the Steelers offensive coordinator role after Saints coach Scott Tolzien withdrew + he interviewed Tuesday in Pittsburgh and his NFL resume includes working with Mike McCarthy and coaching at Pitt from 2006 to 2010.  PennLive
  • Former Steelers Pro Bowl defensive back Clendon Thomas, celebrated for his College Football Hall of Fame career with the Sooners and the Steelers from 1962-68, died at 90 and remains a beloved figure in local sports history.  PennLive
