ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday morning, crews responded to a large water main break on the 2400 block of East Carson Street in Pittsburgh’s South Side + re-salting work allowed the street’s reopening, though water still covers areas near the Birmingham Bridge.  WTAE

CULTURE NEWS

  • 22-year-old Franklin Regional grad Gigi Vitolo completed her short film “No Encore” using her Pitt fellowship after nearly three years in production. The film debuted last year at Frick Fine Arts Auditorium & she plans to share it on YouTube.  The Tribune-Review
  • A local review ranks Oakland coffee shops by comparing latte flavor and cafe feel. Divvy’s Coffee and Buns — known for its smooth taste and warm space — tops the list as Pittsburgh shows its strong coffee scene.  The Pitt News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pitt professors are collaborating with Ukrainian scholars on research projects and donating surplus lab equipment to support work in quantum physics and post-war reconstruction. The partnership, begun after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, aims to sustain academic progress.  The Pitt News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a weekend snowstorm, Pittsburgh removed snow mixed with road salt and pollutants, so the city dumps it at approved sites in Hazelwood Green and near the zoo to keep drinking water safe. The state rules require snow be placed at least 100 feet away from storm drains.  CBS Pittsburgh

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Jan. 28, more than 80 students, professors, and community members joined a virtual course on Medicaid’s role in advancing women’s and infant health equity. Local experts from Pittsburgh’s School of Public Health explained that upcoming funding cuts and new work requirements may reduce access to vital maternal services (according to event speakers).  The Pitt News
  • Teen Duncan Simmons, who beat Burkitt leukemia at UPMC Children's Hospital, started Duncan's Diner to give young patients fresh food choices; donations from Make-A-Wish Foundation, DoorDash + Sheetz have helped raise $25,000 for the cause.  CBS Pittsburgh

  • Pitt football lost junior linebacker Rasheem Biles to Texas as the transfer portal closed + the team will rely on rising players like Braylan Lovelace and Cameron Lindsay while new coach Joe Bowen supports the defense+.  The Pitt News
