BUSINESS NEWS

  • Pittsburgh-based Skild AI raised nearly $1.4 billion on Wednesday — backed by SoftBank Group, NVentures, Macquarie Capital, Jeff Bezos, Disruptive, and 1789 Capital — and now has a valuation over $14 billion.  WPXI
  • Vitalia Wood Fired Oven, a pizza food truck and catering business, opened its first physical store at 1075 Freedom Road in Cranberry Township. The take-out eatery operates Wednesday through Saturday from 4 to 8 p.m. and will serve as a vendor at the upcoming NFL Draft.  KDKA

CULTURE NEWS

  • TribLive has released its weekly photo package 'Scenes from the Valley' featuring images captured from Jan. 8-14 across the Alle-Kiski Valley. Community members can email photo submissions + details to join this local showcase.  The Tribune-Review
  • After a national search led by Margaret Genovese (of Genovese Vanderhoof & Associates), Pittsburgh Opera tapped William Powers as its new general director. Powers, who has led the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra since 2021, will bring his extensive experience to this cultural role.  WPXI
  • The Greensburg Art Center opens its annual member show today at 230 Todd School Road in Hempfield with a free reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit, featuring 56 pieces and the theme (Be Calm in Your Heart), runs through Jan. 27 and offers cash prizes at 3 p.m.  The Tribune-Review

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Pittsburgh Public Schools partnered with the Hear Foundation to launch an initiative that expands public safety education and career-linked learning. The program, introduced at a Friday kick-off event at Pittsburgh Westinghouse High School, gives students hands-on exposure to EMS, firefighting, and other emergency services—helping them build future opportunities.  WPXI
  • Faculty salaries at Pitt improved in fall 2024 after cost-of-living adjustments raised their rankings among AAU publics; the report shows increases from 5.2% for professors to 12% for instructors and notes that faculty in the collective bargaining unit received raises over two years *showing steady progress*.  University Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission announced in early December that electricity supply prices for Duquesne Light and West Penn Power increased on Dec. 4, affecting off-campus Pitt students. Duquesne Light said programs (like the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) can help ease higher bills.  The Pitt News
  • Allegheny County offices, including the Courts and Council, will close Monday, Jan. 19 for MLK Jr. Day with services resuming Tuesday, and KEYS Service AmeriCorps volunteers will help teachers shop for free school supplies at The Education Partnership.  Allegheny County

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at UPMC Magee-Womens in Oakland will begin their first contract talks on Wednesday, Jan. 21 as union reps push for better staffing — improved patient-to-nurse ratios — and longer paid parental leave and pay raises for experienced staff.  The Tribune-Review

  • During the break, the Pirates bolstered their roster by trading for prospects and adding free-agent power, the Penguins made a move for improved scoring, and the Steelers saw coach Mike Tomlin step down after 19 years, prompting a search for his replacement.  The Pitt News
  • Pitt football updated its transfer portal ahead of the 2026-27 season with several new players and exits.
