COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Northland Public Library held a ribbon cutting on Jan. 8 to celebrate its $4.1M renovation along Cumberland Road in McCandless (the update includes a two story extension, teen and mezzanine reading areas and a new cafe). It remained open during construction and fully reopened on Dec. 19.  The Tribune-Review
  • Live Casino Pittsburgh will host spring proms for Derry Area and Mt. Pleasant high schools at its Venue Live space on the second floor, with students riding buses and security provided by chaperones and state troopers. The event includes arcade games and a dance floor for after-dinner fun.  The Tribune-Review
  • Fox Chapel events feature a food drive for Sharpsburg Food Pantry until Jan. 31, a chili cook-off at the Presbyterian Church on Jan. 25, and a budgeting class at 9 a.m. on Jan. 17.   • A water main break left a McCandless shopping center and several businesses without water yesterday, and local crews are working to restore service soon.  WPXI

  • A Pennsylvania Lottery Fast Play ticket worth $135,544 was sold at the 3 2 GO Self-Pay Market at The Mall at Robinson in Robinson Township for the game Rock 'N' Riches, a $5 play that offers top prizes starting at $80,000. The ticket winner has one year to claim the prize.  KDKA
  • Hempfield officials say negotiations with Menards continue after its approved site plan for a 250,000 sqft store expired Dec. 31, more than five years after plans were cleared. Supervisors expect a decision this month so the store can move forward + support local growth.  The Tribune-Review

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 4, 2026, Pittsburgh Regional Transit shifted outbound bus routes (54, 61D, 71A, 71B, 71C, 71D, 75, 93, P3) from Fifth to Forbes Avenue after retiring a 45-year counterflow lane. The change is part of the University Line project, with bus-only lanes and infrastructure planned for completion by 2027.  The Pitt News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Steelers fans showed high energy as they packed the stadium before Monday's playoff game against the Texans at Heinz Field. The charged atmosphere brought local spirit to the pregame buildup.  CBS Pittsburgh
  • On Saturday, the Steelers surprised local flag football advocate Chris Curd, who expanded access for thousands of youth in western Pennsylvania, by giving him two Super Bowl LX tickets at Montour Sports Complex — a nod to his efforts supporting girls flag football.  WPXI
  • If the Steelers beat the Texans on Monday Night Football, they will face the Patriots in Foxborough for a playoff rematch. Game time details remain unconfirmed — NBC or CBS will air the game.  PennLive
